ANIMATION TECHNIQUE AND
ART DIRECTION
TONALLI is a 2D digitally hand drawn film. The technique allowed me to explore the use of different textures - used to define the character of each location, and to use the fluidity of frame by frame animation to experiment with the movement of the shadows.
In a personal note I’m more drawn to traditional animation techniques that favor the physical drawings. The engagement that is required to draw each frame - either on a paper or on a drawing tablet - makes me relate with my projects in a corporeal manner regardless of the flatness of the screen fromat which they are observed.
The film occurs in a highly stylized, abstract world. In which different key elements (such as trees or a cup of tea) give a cue of each location.
Colors: The film is monochromatic, on a scale of browns and blacks to white. Helping with setting a clear division between the “shadow world” and the “physical world”.
